LE GROS-THEIL COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Location Information

Le Gros-Theil is a village and commune about 13 kilometres south-west of Elbeuf, a small town 18 kilometres south-south-west of Rouen. In the western part of the communal cemetery, some 30 yards west of the chapel which is east of the main path, is the collective grave of five airmen of the Royal Air Force and three airmen of the Royal Australian Air Force.

​Burial Details

All were in 463 Squadron and were killed on 18th December 1944. 5 were in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and 3 in the Royal Australian Air Force.

424117 Flying Officer Kenneth Edwin Harold Bennett, aged 22. Son of Harold and Ethel Louisa Bennett, of Annandale, New South Wales, Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "Dearly Loved And Sadly Missed, Dad, Mum And Brother Selwyn Of Sydney"

28766 Pilot Officer Robert Wentworth Byrnes, aged 26.
 Son of Robert Wentworth Byrnes and Ena Louie Marie Byrnes, of Blanchetown, South Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "Dearly Loved Son Of Mr. And Mrs. R. Byrnes Of Blanchetown, South Australia"

1522162 Flight Sergeant Samuel Easton, aged 21. Son of James and Esther Easton, of Glasgow. His headstone bears the inscription "Fond Memories Linger Every Day, Remembrance Keeps Them Near"

1826506 Sergeant Henry Fowler, aged 23. Son of Annie Fowler and stepson of William Douglas, of West Calder, Midlothian; husband of Christina Fowler, of West Calder. His headstone bears the inscription "Hearts That Loved Him Do Not Forget. His Life A Treasured Memory. Mum And Dad"

1787720 Sergeant Gordon Abercromby Center Frizzell, aged 20.
 Son of George Graham Frizzell and Mary Jane Frizzell (nee Donaldson), of Galashiels, Selkirkshire.

1592205 Sergeant Reginald George Nuttall, aged 19. Son of Albert and Ethel Nuttall, of Doncaster, Yorkshire. His headstone bears the inscription "Remembered Always"

418559 Flying Officer James Henderson Ogilvie, aged 21.
 Son of Gilbert Primrose Ogilvie and Daphne Ogilvie, of East Malvern, Victoria, Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "His Memory Will Live For Ever"

187732 Pilot Officer Thomas Nicholson Watson, aged 22. 
Son of David and Mary J. W. Watson, of Bellshill, Lanarkshire. His headstone bears the inscription "They Died That We Might Live"
