Location Information

​Verrières is a village 10 kilometres south-south-east of Troyes in the Department of the Aube. The church is on the Rue de St. Martin. The graves of seven WW2 airmen who died on the 26th July 1944 are on the far left side from the entrance.
​
They are commemorated on three headstones.

World War Two Casualties: United Kingdom 5, Australia 2. Total 7.


Flight Details:

R.A.F. Base: Grimsby, Lincolnshire
Unit. 100 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk I, serial LL915
Target: Stuttgart, Germany
Incident: Aircraft crashed at Verrières (Aube) France. There were no survivors.

Pilot in Royal Australian Air Force, aged 21.

Son of George Henry and Ethel Louisa Billman of St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia.

​His headstone bears the inscription 
"Greater Love Hath No Man"

Eye witnesses at that time thought the pilot deliberately crashed the aircraft in a little field in order to avoid a crash on the village itself.

1678129 Sergeant John George Furness Evans, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 20. Son of John Raven and Annie Gillespie Evans of Claughton, Cheshire. His headstone bears the inscription "In Loving Memory Of George Sadly Missed By His Mother. And All Relatives"

1594563 Sergeant James Melville, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 30. His headstone bears the inscription "Always Remembered By His Brothers, Sisters And Friends. Rest In Peace"

52571 Flying Officer Royston Edwards Monk, Royal Air Force, aged 21. Son of Richard George and Margaret Mary Monk of Ferndale, Glamorgan. His headstone bears the inscription "A New Commandment I Give Unto You, That Ye Love One Another. St. John XIII. 34"
