A clerk prior to enlisting on 17 August 1941, he completed his initial training at Bradfield Park, NSW and was later attached to the RAF. On 5 July 1943, Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Clarke, (No 10 Operational Training Unit), died on operations over Brittany, France as a member of the crew of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley 5 BD 359.
