LAON (ST. JUST) COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Location Information

Laon, situated on an isolated hill, is the chief town and the seat of the Prefecture of the Department of the Aisne. 

St. Just Cemetery is on the northern side of the town just below the Rampart St Just.



Historical Information

The graves of nine airmen who fell during the 1939-1945 war are at the bottom of the slope, near the western corner of the cemetery. Seven of them belonged to the Royal Air Force, and one each to the Royal Canadian and Royal New Zealand Air Forces.

World War Two Casualties: United Kingdom 7, Canada 1, New Zealand. Total 9.

Son of John and Ethel Harrison, of Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

His headstone bears the inscription "At The Going Down Of The Sun And In The Morning We Will Remember Thee"

His headstone bears the inscription "Greater Love Hath No Man"

103550 Pilot Officer Arnold Foster Cheetham, Pilot in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th May 1942, aged 27. Son of Eugene W. Cheetham and Amy Agnes Cheetham, of Bridlington, Yorkshire. His headstone bears the inscription "In Everlasting Memory Of A Beloved Son And Brother. Rest In Peace"

742695 Flight Sergeant Francis Derek Jago, Air Gunner in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th May 1942, aged 27. Son of Sidney Herbert and M. M. Jago, of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. His headstone bears the inscription "Though Absent From Sight, Ever In Our Thoughts"

1152526 Sergeant Frederick Bertram Pomeroy, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th May 1942. Son of Frederick W. Pomeroy, and of Patricia Pomeroy, of Hove, Sussex.

968972 Flight Sergeant James Arthur Shaw, Air Gunner in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th May 1942.

569626 Sergeant Basil Ernest Smith, Flight Engineer in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force, died 5th May 1942, aged 21. Son of Ernest James Smith and Sarah Smith, of Haverthwaite, Lancashire. His headstone bears the inscription "Let Light Perpetual Shine On Them"
