VRIZY COMMUNAL CEMETERY

GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 49.42601, Longitude: 4.6745

Location Information

Vrizy is a village and commune about 39 kilometres south of Mezieres and 4 kilometres north of Vouziers, on the road to Attigny and Rethel. The Communal Cemetery is north-west of the church.


History Information

Near the south-eastern corner are the graves of six airmen, four of whom belonged to the Royal Air Force and one each to the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.


Burial Details:

The following were all in 61 Squadron and  killed on 30th July 1942.

R/67249 Flight Sergeant William Vincent McQuaid, Royal Canadian Air Force.

1380205 Sergeant Leonard George Millar, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 30.
 Son of L. George and Alice Millar; husband of Margaret Rose Millar, of Cheadle, Cheshire. His headstone bears the inscription "May Perpetual Light Shine Upon Thee. Ever Lovingly Remembered By All"

962821 Sergeant Robert Albert Parsons, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 29. Son of Clara Annie Parsons, of Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent.

1305069 Sergeant Joseph Albert Rice, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 26. Son of James and Florence M. Rice, of Balham, London. His headstone bears the inscription "Gone But Not Forgotten"

405337 Pilot Officer Jack Graham Stewart, 
Royal New Zealand Air Force, aged 27. Son of Alfred Stewart and of Rose Stewart (nee Kragahen); husband of Grace Stewart, of Palmerston North, Wellington, New Zealand. 

983200 Sergeant John Elphege Sullivan, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 24. Son of John and Doris Sullivan; husband of Daphne Sullivan, of Cwmaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan. his headstone bears the inscription "R. I. P. Time Passes, But Love And Precious Memories Remain. Mam And Daphne"


Casualties: United Kingdom 4, Canada 1, New Zealand 1. Total 6.
