TAINGY COMMUNAL CEMETERY
Yonne
France

Location Information

Taingy is a village and commune 14.5 miles (23 kilometres) south-west of Auxerre, and 5 miles (8 kilometres) west of Courson-les-Carrieres. The most practical way of visiting the village is by taxi from Auxerre, which has good rail connections with Paris. The cemetery lies on the western side of the village on the road leading to the neighbouring hamlet of Vassy. Near the centre of the southern half of the cemetery are the graves of seven British airmen.

Base: R.A.F. Kirmington, Lincolnshire
Unit: 166 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk III, serial LM386
Target: Stuttgart, Germany
Incident: The Lancaster crashed near Aubigny, Yonne, France. There were no survivors.

152948 Flying Officer Herbert Sidney William Blaber, Navigator in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 20.
 Son of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Blaber, of Willesden, Middlesex.

1896156 Sergeant Frederick William Fisher, Air Gunner in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 33.  Son of John and Edith Fisher; husband of Martha Fisher of Dodworth, Yorkshire.

1671698 Sergeant James Fitzpatrick, Air Gunner in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 22. Son of John and Anastasia Fitzpatrick of Knotty Ash, Liverpool.

147118 Flying Officer Stanley Kenneth Shrives, Navigator/Bomber in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 24. Son of Charles and Hilda Emmeline Shrives of Sutton, Surrey. Cornwell Scout.

171643 Flying Officer Bernard Townsend Singleton, Pilot in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 23.Son of Fred Townsend and Martha Singleton of Prestwich, Lancashire.

1810864 Sergeant Kenneth Ernest Welsh, Flight Engineer in 166 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 26th July 1944, aged 19. Son of David Charles and Margaret Welsh of Winchmore Hill, Middlesex.
