ST. AGATHA-RODE CHURCHYARD

Location Information

The village of St. Agatha-Rode is situated to the south of Leuven off the N25 which runs between Leuven and Namur. Follow the N25 to the village of Hamme-Mille and in the centre turn right towards Nethen. From Nethen follow the signs towards Pecrot and over the railway. After the railway there is a road junction where Sint-Agatha-Rode is signed. The church and cemetery are in the centre of the village. The graves are visible from the entrance.


Historical Information

The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940, and suffered many casualties in covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk. 

St. Agatha-Rode Churchyard contains five Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.

4189535 Fusilier James Lewis, 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers, died 15th May 1940.

4197065 Fusilier Albert Mason, 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers, died 15th May 1940, aged 21. Son of Arthur Price Mason and Alice Mason, of Nantmel, Radnorshire.

3961254 Fusilier John Anthony Price, 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers, died 15th May 1940, aged 19. Son of David and Sarah Ann Price, of Dowlais, Glamorgan.

4192896 Fusilier William Rowe, 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers, died 15th May 1940, aged 21. Son of Edward and Elizabeth Rowe, of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire.

4071474 Fusilier Lewis Thomas Daniel Watkins, 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers, died 15th May 1940, aged 20. Son of William Henry and Florence Jane Watkins, of Old Pen-y-Garn, Monmouthshire.
