Location Information

Enschede is a large town in the Province of Overijssel, in the north-eastern part of the Netherlands, close to the German border. The cemetery is located in Noord Esmarkerrondweg opposite Lipperkerkstraat, on the eastern side of the town. The entrance is opposite a tyre replacement firm. The Second World War Commonwealth Plot is in the north-western part of the cemetery. The First World War Commonwealth Plot will be found by turning right past the building and following the first gravel path to Plot 12.

Visiting Information

The cemetery can be visited from sunrise to sunset.

Historical Information

Enschede Eastern General Cemetery contains 11 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.

Second World War burials number 50, about half of them airmen, the rest members of the Commonwealth land forces, killed in the final stages of the war in Holland.

Total Commonwealth Burials: 61.

World War One Commonwealth Burials: United Kingdom 11.

World War Two Commonwealth Burials. United Kingdom 36, Canada 6, Australia 4, New Zealand 1, South Africa 1. Total 48.

Son of Harold D. and Elvera L. Bellinger, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

His headstone bears the inscription "Who Does Not Remember And Love Him Who Fights, Even Unto Death, For His Country"


A student, residing on Dougall Avenue in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, he enlisted in the RCAF on 16 Oct 1941 in Windsor.

434 Squadron's Handley Page Halifax V (#DK259) bomber aircraft, with an aircrew of six, took off from RAF Tholthorpe on a night-time air operation over Bochum, in Germany's industrial Ruhr district. DK259 was attacked by a German night-fighter, resulting in its crashing near Enschede in the Netherlands and taking the lives of two members of the crew. (Sergeant Bertram  Thomas Scudder's image and details are further down the page). Three of the crew, all Canadians, were captured, taken PoW; the American pilot of DK259, RCAF Jackson ('Jack') Temple CLARY, was able to evade capture, making his way back to England.

His headstone bears the inscription "That Love So True No Tongue Can Tell: God Watch Over You, All Is Well"

103 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#W4335) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, failed to return following air operations over Essen, Germany; the Lancaster had been shot down by a German night fighter and crashed in the middle of the town of Enschede, in the Netherlands. Miraculously, there were no civilian casualties. All seven crew members were killed and buried in this cemetery.

Flight Lieutenant George was one of three airmen killed in the crash 409 Squadron's De Havilland Mosquito NF MK XII (#MM567) Mosquito NF MK XII (#MM567) aircraft. Taking off from Twente in The Netherlands for a flight to Drope, Germany, the Mosquito crashed in attempting to fly in formation with another Mosquito aircraft. Tragically, two Dutch civilians, on the ground, also perished in the accident.

Son of Arthur William John and Janet Wilson (née Preston) Hanna of Knight Street. Father was born in England and his Mother in Scotland.

An aircraft mechanic by trade, residing on Knight Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he enlisted in the RCAF on 3 Dec 1942 in Toronto.

Flying Officer Hanna lost his life in the crash of 414 Squadron's Supermarine Spitfire (#MV269) aircraft.

25th March 1945, aged 24.

Son of Earl Stanley Jenvey and of Mary Eunice Jenvey (nee Mitchell), of Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada; husband of Beulah Marguerite Jenvey (nee Chamberlain), of Ingersoll.

His headstone bears the inscription "His Work Well Done, His Battle Won, He Has Gone To His Reward"

On 29 Dec 1944, 440 Squadron's Hawker Typhoon IB (#RB201) aircraft, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Jenvey, was shot down in the Netherlands. Jenvey survived the resulting crash, managing to evade capture until late March 1945 when he was caught and murdered by his captors on 25 March 1945.

Identified and buried in this cemetery is 406693 Flight Sergeant Edward Vivian Laing, aged 22 who is pictured above, third from the left. His plane was shot down  and he was killed alongside the six other crew members on 21st January 1943.  Son of Arthur Vivian and Laura May Laing, of Denmark, Western Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "He Died That We Might Live"

Also buried here is 411566 Flight Sergeant Douglas George Williams, more details at the bottom of the page.

Son of Howard and Mildred Maidand-Thompson; husband of Jean Maidand-Thompson, of South Croydon, Surrey.

His headstone bears the inscription "In Everloving Memory Of Bastian"
.

On 28th July 1945 Bastian and some junior officers crossed the border into Germany to visit an Officers Club for lunch. 0n the return journey along the Bergsteinfurt Road his jeep skidded on the wet road. His physique meant that he was partly outside the vehicle and his body impacted a tree, killing him instantly.

Killed in the 'Brummen Incident'
​
Prisoners of War from the 1st Airborne division were being taken in open lorries towards a POW camp in Germany. One of the lorries, driving through Brummen village, slowed down, 2 Airborne officers took their chances & escaped. A German SS soldier ran to the back of the truck and opened fire inside the truck on the unarmed POW's, killing a German guard & 4 British POW's

A clerk by trade, residing on Union Street in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, he enlisted in the RCAF on 2 Sept 1941 in St. Stephen.

196 Squadron's Short Stirling III (#EH961) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off from RAF Witchford for a night air operation over Berlin, Germany. EH961 was shot down by a German night-fighter, crashing at Knalhutte, Enschede, Overijssel, the Netherlands. Three of the crew lost their lives in the crash and the other four were captured and taken POW.
