BORNE (BORNERBROEK) ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHYARD

Location Information

Borne is a village and commune 6 kilometres north-west of Hengelo, in the province of Overijssel. Bornerbroek is a village in the commune, 7 kilometres west of Borne village and 5 kilometres south of the town of Almelo, on the Almelo-Ambt-Delden road.

The Roman Catholic churchyard is in the centre of the village, and the six Commonwealth Airmen are in the south-western part.

The six crew members from 429 Squadron on the Wellington HE392 429 were killed on 27th April 1943 during a raid on Duisburg and were shot down at Entersestraat just west of Bornerbroek by night fighter pilot Oberleutnant August Geiger of the 7./NJG 1, flying a Bf 110 G-4 from Twente airfield.

His headstone bears the inscription "Beloved Son And Brother. To Live In Hearts We Leave Behind Is Not To Die"

Samuel enlisted in Vancouver, British Columbia on May 17, 1941.

Son of Hugh Brown Purchase and Emily Ethel (nee Cox) Purchase, of Toronto, Ontario. Husband of Marjorie Dorothea Purchase, of Toronto, Ontario.

His headstone bears the inscription "Faithful Unto Death"

1038224 Sergeant George Kenneth Thompson, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, aged 22. 
Son of Harold Wortley Thompson and Elsie Augusta Thompson, of Harrogate, Yorkshire.
