Location Information

They-sous-Montfort is a village and commune 35 kilometres north-west of Épinal, and 25 kilometres south-east of Neufchâteau.

The churchyard lies east of the village on the road leading to the neighbouring village of Domjulien. It contains the graves of five British and one Australian airmen.

Burial Details

151158 Flying Officer Edward Bashi, 100 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 26. Son of Abraham A. Bashi and Habiba A. Bashi, of Baghdad, Iraq. B.Sc. Engr. (Lond.). His headstone bears the inscription "Here Rests Our Beloved Only Son. Worthy Of Everlasting Love"

172301 Pilot Officer William John Bell, 100 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 21.
Son of William John and Ann P. Bell, of Newbury, Berkshire. Awarded a County Scholarship. His headstone bears the inscription "He Is Not Dead But Sleepeth"

1026577 Sergeant William Leonard Evans, 100 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 23. Son of Margaret Evans, of Abercynon, Glamorgan. His headstone bears the inscription "DUW A'M GWAREDODD I RHAG POB GWEITHRED DDRWG, AC A'M CEIDW I'W DEYRNAS NEFOL" II TIM. IV.18​"

1505659 Sergeant Laurence Jakeman, 100 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 22.
​Son of Edith Jakeman, of Tadcaster, Yorkshire; husband of Ruth Anne Jakeman. of Tadcaster. His headstone bears the inscription "To The World He Was One Of Many, To Us He Was All The World"

659155 Flight Sergeant Kenneth Stanley Keeping, 100 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force, died 28th April 1944, aged 22. Son of Allan Sedgwick Keeping and Nellie Keeping, of Exeter. His headstone bears the inscription "I Think Of You When Gulls Cry Shrill Time We Will Distance Faithful Still"

424124 Flight Sergeant Gordon William McLean, 
Royal Australian Air Force, died 28th April 1944, aged 29. Son of William Henry and Leveina Pricilla McLean; husband of Olive Marjorie McLean, of Bondi, New South Wales, Australia.
