Location Information

St. Gibrien is a village and commune some 5.2 kilometres north-west of Châlons-en-Champagne. Just inside the main entrance to the churchyard are the graves of five British, one Canadian and one Australian airmen.


Flight Details:

R.A.F. Base: Mildenhall, Suffolk
Unit: 15 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk I, serial LL827
Target: Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne)
Incident: The aircraft crashed at St. Gibrien. There were no survivors.


Burial Details


1578476 Flight Sergeant Francis Robert Ashcroft, Navigator in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 16th July 1944.

1580420 Sergeant Eric Attenborrow, Wireless Operator (Air) in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 16th July 1944, aged 22. Son of Thomas and Florence Attenborrow, of Nottingham.

1832828 Sergeant Ernest Donald Carmichael, Air Gunner in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 16th July 1944, aged 19. Son of Donald Howell Carmichael and Alice May Carmichael, of Mayhill, Swansea.

R/50312 Warrant Officer Class II John Alexander MacLennan, Air Bomber in 15 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 16th July 1944.

2209656 Sergeant Clifford Sykes, Air Gunner in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 16th July 1944, aged 20. Son of Walter and Ivy Sykes, of Dukinfield, Cheshire.

1874644 Sergeant Dennis George Tarbin, Flight Engineer in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 16th July 1944, aged 19. Son of Alfred and Ella Sarah Tarbin, of Toppesfield, Essex.

410203 Warrant Officer James Alphonsus Upton, Royal Australian Air Force, died 16th July 1944, aged 30. Son of John Thomas Upton and Margaret Upton, of Casterton. Victoria. Australia.
