Location Information

Soudé is a village and commune 24 kilometres south of Châlons-en-Champagne, and 20 kilometres west of Vitry-le-François. The graves of five British and one Canadian airmen are 56 feet from the east wall of the churchyard.


Flight details

R.A.F. Base: R.A.F. Ridgewell, Essex
Unit: 90 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Stirling Mk III, serial BF462
Target: Stuttgart, Germany
Incident: The aircraft crashed at Soudé-Notre-Dame
Flight Lieut. R. J. Beldin survived the crash and was taken prisoner.


Burial Details


9529 Warrant Officer Class II Richard Barnett Blake, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 90 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 15th April 1943, aged 27. Son of William Barnett Blake and Isabella Blake, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; husband of Rose M. Blake.

1384731 Sergeant Stanley Francis Gould, Air Gunner in 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943, aged 21. Son of Robert Stanley and Frances Elizabeth Gould, of Dorking, Surrey.

1031693 Sergeant Samuel Hammond, Air Gunner in 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943.

977618 Sergeant Harry Noar, Flight Engineer in 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943, aged 27. Son of Harry and Daisy Noar; stepson of Florence Noar, of Droylsden, Lancashire.

1230761 Sergeant Robert John Palmer, Navigator (Bomber) in 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943, aged 20. Son of James Charles and Margaret Amy Palmer, of Circencester, Gloucestershire.

1232268 Sergeant Edwin Arthur Shaw, Navigator (Bomber) in 90 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943, aged 21.
