Location Information

Sorbon is a village and commune about 23 miles (37 kilometres) south-west of Mezieres and about 2.75 miles (4.5 kilometres) north of Rethel. The nearest railway station is at Rethel, on the Paris to Luxembourg line, where taxis may be hired. In the churchyard, near the south-western corner of the church, are the graves of two airmen of the Royal Air Force.


Burial Details


907386 Sergeant Leonard Gaffe, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th September 1943, aged 21. Son of F. W. Gaffee and Mary Gaffee, of Tilbury, Essex. His headstone bears the inscription "In Loving Memory Of Our Dear Son Who Did His Best. Sadly Missed By All" 

1811429 Sergeant Roy James Humbles, Air Gunner in 149 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 5th September 1943, aged 19. Son of William and Laura Maynella Humbles, of Southgate, Middlesex. His headstone bears the inscription "His Happy Disposition Was A Pattern For Youth. Courageous And True"
