Location Information

Schoenau is a village near the German frontier, 40 kilometres south of Strasbourg and 16 kilometres east of Sélestat. In the north-eastern corner of the churchyard are the graves of 4 airmen of the Royal Air Force.

Flight Information


Took off 2144 27 April 1944 from Mildenhall. Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Schoenau (Bas-Rhin) a small village on the W bank of the Rhine and opposite the little German community of Rheinhausen (Oberhausen).

Burial Details

1348049 Flight Sergeant Wilbert Cully, Air Gunner in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 22. Son of Robert and Flora Cully, of Largs, Ayrshire. His headstone bears the inscription "To Our Beloved Son, Killed On His 32nd Operation. He Died That Others Might Live"

1586348 Sergeant John Gordon Eastman, Navigator in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 20. Son of John Edward and Ethel Eastman, of Longwell Green, Gloucestershire. His headstone bears the inscription "Always In Our Thoughts. A Noble Son And Loving Brother Dearly Loved By All"

1387793 Flight Sergeant Arthur Mathews, Wireless Operator in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944.

1822226 Sergeant Robert Watson, Air Gunner in 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 28th April 1944, aged 19. Son of Thomas F. Watson and Janet Watson, of Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. His headstone bears the inscription "In Death, As In Life, Sure And Steadfast"
