MONTIGNY-LE-GUESDIER COMMUNAL CEMETERY
Seine-et-Marne
France

Location Information

The village of Montigny-le-Guesdier in the Department of the Seine-et-Marne is situated 25 kilometres south of Provins and 23 kilometres north of Sens. The communal cemetery lies on the northern side of the village on the Route de Bray towards the town of Bray-sur-Seine. Near the middle of the north wall are the graves of 7 airmen from the United Kingdom who served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. They died on the 4th May 1944.


Flight Details:

Base: R.A.F. Wickenby, Lincolnshire
Unit: 626 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk III, serial EE148
Target: Military installations, Mailly-le-Camp, Aube, France
Incident: The aircraft was shot down by a night figher during the return flight and crashed at Montigny-le-Guesdier, France. There were no survivors.


Burial Details:
 
1591244 Sergeant Howard Measor Crooks, Flight Engineer in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 19. Son of William and Hilda Crooks of Sunderland, Co. Durham.

170281 Pilot Officer Norman James Fisher, Pilot in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 29. Son of George Phillip and Mabel Louisa Fisher of New Southgate, London. His brother, Kenneth George, also died on service.

1893335 Sergeant Robert Frederick Godfrey,  Air Gunner in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 20. Son of Frederick Herbert and Beatrice Maud Godfrey of West Ham, Essex

1396651 Sergeant Noel Hatton, Navigator in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 21. Son of William Charles and Beatrice Eveline Hatton of Rottingdean, Sussex

151847 Flying Officer Kenneth Thomas Larman, Air Bomber in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 21. Son of Thomas and Margaret Larman of Hull; husband of Beryl Caley Larman of Hull

1515925 Sergeant Victor Ronald Roper, Radio Operator in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 22. Son of Harold and Eleanor Roper of Salford, Lancashire; husband of Elsie Margaret Roper of Higher Broughton, Salford

2209456 Sergeant John Waites, Air Gunner in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944.
