MARGERIE-HANCOURT CHURCHYARD

Location Information

Margerie-Hancourt is a village 48 kilometres south-east of Châlons-en-Champagne and 20 kilometres south of Vitry-le-François. The Church is located in the middle of the village, and in the north corner of the churchyard are the graves of three British and one Canadian airmen.


Burial Details


1823003 Sergeant William Shaw, Flight Engineer in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 19th July 1944, aged 19. Son of Thomas Campbell Shaw and Mary Shaw, of Kirkcaldy, Fife; husband of Lizzie Shaw, of Kirkcaldy.
INSCRIPTION. BELOVED HUSBAND OF LIZZIE MORTIMER. KIRKCALDY, SCOTLAND. DEARLY LOVED.

1584152 Sergeant Francis Bertram Smith, Air Gunner in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 19th July 1944, aged 20. Son of Bertram and Mary Elizabeth Smith, of Kirk Langley, Derbyshire. INSCRIPTION. HE GAVE THAT WHICH HE LOVED MOST, FOR HE, TOO, LOVED LIFE.

J/88424 Pilot Officer Albert John Williamson, Navigator in 207 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 19th July 1944, aged 23. Son of Robert and Annie Williamson, of Little Current, Ontario, Canada. INSCRIPTION. SLEEP ON, MY SON, AND TAKE YOUR REST, WE LOVED YOU WELL BUT JESUS LOVED YOU BEST.

1510808 Sergeant Bertie Woodward, Wireless Operator in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 19th July 1944, aged 32. Son of Jack E. Hannah Woodward and Jane Woodward; husband of Lilian Woodward, of Pendlebury, Lancashire. INSCRIPTION. HIS WIFE LILIAN DIED 1947. BOTH SADLY MISSED BY LOVING SON RONNIE. "REST ETERNAL".
