MARCK (LES HEMMES) CHURCHYARD

Location Information

Les Hemmes is a hamlet in the District of Marck, 5 kilometres north of the village of Marck. It is near the sea on the coastal raod from Calais to Gravelines (D119).


Historical Information

Near the southern boundary of the churchyard are the graves of seven soldiers from the United Kingdom, two of whom are not identified.



Burial Details

1894361 Sapper Herbert Thomas Lines, Royal Engineers, 667 Gen. Constr. Coy., died 29th May 1940, aged 26. Son of Bertie Charles and Margaret Annie Lines, of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

6654462 Gunner George Edward Read, 2 Medium Regt. Royal Artillery, died 29th May 1940.

T/162529 Lance Corporal John Simmonds, Royal Army Service Corps, died between 27/05/1940 and 28/05/1940. Son of Hannah Simmonds; husband of Nellie Simmonds, of South Lambeth, London.

T/110586 Driver Eric Sproat, Royal Army Service Corps, died 29th May 1940, aged 22. Son of Mary Elizabeth Troughton, of Grassgarth, Westmorland.

6846991 Rifleman Sidney Ernest Woollsey, 7th Bn. King's Royal Rifle Corps, died 26th May 1940.
