DONTILLY COMMUNAL CEMETERY
Seine-et-Marne
France

Location Information

The villages of Dontilly and Donnemarie-en-Montois in the Department of the Seine-et-Marne, combined in the 1960's to become Donnemarie-Dontilly. This village is 35 kilometres south-east of Melun and 13 kilometres south-east of Nangis. The Communal Cemetery is on the south side of the village of Dontilly, on the road (D75) to Châtenay-sur-Seine. In the south-west portion of the cemetery is the collective grave of 7 airmen, 6 belonging to the Royal Air Force and 1 to the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Flight Details:

Base: R.A.F. Spilsby, Lincolnshire
Unit: 207 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk III, serial ND575
Target: Mailly-le-Camp, Aube, France
Incident: The aircraft crashed at Donnemarie-Dontilly, Seine-et-Marne. There were no survivors.


Burial Details:

1238928  Sergeant Raymond Barker, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 22. Son of Harry and Elsie M. Barker of Sheffield. 
 INSCRIPTION. O VALIANT HEART"

J/88192  Pilot Officer Norman George Baskerville,  Air Bomber in 207 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 4th May 1944, aged 24. Son of George P. and Mabel E. Baskerville of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  INSCRIPTION. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER HIM.

173058 Pilot Officer Cyril Bell, Pilot in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944.

1461670 Flight Sergeant Raymond Jack Cross, Navigator in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 26. Son of Leslie Vincent and Nellie May Cross of Boston, Lincolnshire. 
INSCRIPTION. THEIRS WAS THE AIR, OURS IS THE EARTH, BECAUSE OF THEM.

1851377 Sergeant Raymond Ernest Dance, Flight Engineer in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 18. Son of Ernest and Hilda May Dance of Berrick, Benson, Oxfordshire. INSCRIPTION. OUR DARLING. ALWAYS IN OUR THOUGHTS.

1652873 Sergeant Howard Cullimore Jones, Air Gunner in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944.

175985 Pilot Officer Sidney Hubert Willies, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 207 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944.
