Location Information

Chevillon is a village 46 kilometres north of Chaumont, and 16 kilometres south-east of St Dizier. Chevillon Communal Cemetery is on the western side of the village, on the road to Rachecourt-sur-Marne. The graves are to the right of the central path from the entrance.


History Information

There are 10 Commonwealth Airmen from World War Two commemorated in this site.

Casualties: United Kingdom 7, Australia, 2, Canada 1.

Aircraft Avro Lancaster III, JB644, AS-A2 on the night of 12 July 1944. They were recalled before reaching their target and were attacked on the way back and shot down by a German night-fighter. 2 of the Crew Survived and evaded capture.

His headstone bears the inscription "In Loving Memory Of A Devoted Husband, Dear Daddy, Loving Son And Brother"

171644 Pilot Officer John McLaren, Pilot in 166 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 13th July 1944, aged 27. Son of Alexander McLaren and of Elizabeth McLaren (nee Reid), husband of Elizabeth Mary McLaren (nee Adam), of Stonehaven, Kincardineshire. His headstone bears the inscription "Dearly Loved Husband of Elizabeth M. Adam"

1566514 Sergeant David Ferguson Paton, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 166 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 13th July 1944, aged 21. Son of Jean Paton, of Glasgow. His headstone bears the inscription "And Now The Streams May Sing For Others' Pleasure"

 Aircraft - Lancaster ME 755; Place - France; Date - 15 July 1944.
Shot down by a night fighter at Chevillon near St Dizier returning from a raid on the Revigny Rail Yards, 2 of the Crew Survived and evaded capture.

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th July 1944, aged 33. Son of Frederick and Annie Mary Jeffries, of North Kensington, London; husband of Maud Jeffries. His headstone bears the inscription "Loving Memory Of My Dear Son Who Gave His Life That We Might Live. Loved By All"

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th July 1944, aged 21. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Kilsby, of Kettering, Northamptonshire. His headstone bears the inscription "Always Remembered"
