BÉNESTROFF COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Location Information

Bénestroff is a village in the Department of the Moselle, 50 kilometres south-east of Metz. The communal cemetery is on the southern side of the village, on the road to Marimont. Near the south-eastern wall, a few metres from the eastern corner of the cemetery, are the graves of 5 airmen; 4 of them belonged to the Royal Air Force and 1 to the Royal Canadian Air Force.

J/89946 Pilot Officer Theodore Phillip Bourque, Air Gunner in 78 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 25th April 1944.

1819251 Sergeant Henry Gibbs, Flight Engineer in 78 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th April 1944, aged 21. Son of Charles and Sarah Gibbs, of Warwick. INSCRIPTION. DEARLY LOVED SON OF CHARLES AND SARAH GIBBS OF WARWICK, ENGLAND.

31398 Flying Officer James McCartney, Pilot in 78 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th April 1944, aged 29. Son of William and Dorothy McCartney; husband of Joan McCartney, of Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire INSCRIPTION. IN LOVING MEMORY.

1796390 Sergeant John Alfred Edward Skeat, Air Gunner in 78 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th April 1944, aged 19. Son of Alfred Edwin John and Amy May Skeat, of Belfast, Northern Ireland. INSCRIPTION. SLEEPING IN HEAVENLY PEACE.

1021045 Flight Sergeant John Edward Waltham, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in  78 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th April 1944.
