Zelhem (Halle) Protestant Cemetery

​Location Information

The village of Halle is administered by, and 6 kilometres to the south-east of, Zelhem. The cemetery is on the north-eastern side of the road leading from Zelhem to Halle and is 270 metres from Halle.

Historical Information

In the north-eastern corner of the cemetery are the graves of 6 airmen from the United Kingdom. They have the usual Commission headstones, and in the centre is a memorial to these airmen which was erected by the local people.


Their plane was shot down by a Bf110 night fighter at Halle 6 miles northeast of Doetinchem during a raid on Berlin.

547673 Sergeant George Edward Merryweather, 214 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force, died 30th August 1940, aged 20. Son of George Henry and Clara Merryweather, of Blankney Fen, Lincolnshire. His headstone bears the inscription "Now Sleeping Peacefully, Free From Pain, In God's Own Time We Shall Meet Again"

755485 Sergeant Arthur Burnham Puzey, 214 Squadron, 
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 30th August 1940, aged 20. Son of Sqdn. Ldr. George Arthur Puzey, R.A.F., and Daisy Henrietta Puzey, of Slough, Buckinghamshire. His headstone bears the inscription "His Chosen Duty"
