Location Information

Yvrencheux is a village and commune in the Department of the Somme, some 15 kilometres north-east of Abbeville, and about 2 kilometres north of the main road (N.41) through St. Riquier to Auxi-le-Château.

In the churchyard, in the north-western part, are the graves of five airmen of the Royal Air Force who died on the 25th June 1944


Flight Details:
R.A.F. Base: Bardney, Lincolnshire
Unit: 9 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk III, serial ND948
Target: V1 storage and launch sites near Prouville, Somme
Incident: The Lancaster crashed at Yvrencheux, Somme. Two of the crew survived and were taken prisoner:
Flt. Sgt. K. Hughes, R.A.F.V.R. 
Flying Officer R. R. Nightingale, Royal Australian Air Force

171334 Pilot Officer Ronald Henry Craig, Pilot in 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th June 1944, aged 20. Son of John Henry and Catherine Craig of West Derby, Liverpool.

1331538 Flight Sergeant Gordon Ernest Freeman, Navigator in 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th June 1944.

1851362 Sergeant Cyril Edward Hansford, Flight Engineer in 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th June 1944, aged 19. Son of Edward Charles and Freda Winifred Hansford of Parkstone, Dorsetshire.


1125814 Sergeant Arthur Rex Marwood, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th June 1944, aged 22. Son of Cecil Empson and Hilda Mary Marwood of Shap, Westmorland.

1602814 Sergeant Denis Victor George Smith, Air Gunner in 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 25th June 1944.
