Location Information

Montescourt-Lizerolles is in the Department of the Aisne, with two contiguous villages. It is about 12 kilometres south of St.Quentin and 13 kilometres due east of Ham. The Communal Cemetery is 800 metres south-east of the railway station.



History Information

The Communal Cemetery was used by British troops in February and March, 1918, and by the Germans when they captured the place in March. There are now 30, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated on this site of which 9 are unidentified. There is also 1, 1939-45 commonwealth burial

5th February 1918, aged 41.

Son of Robert and Mary Lawson, of Weston-in-Gordano, Somerset; husband of Janet Kathleen Lawson, of "Margaretts," Haslemere, Surrey. Headmaster of Buxton College, Derbyshire, 1911-1917.

His headstone bears the inscription "Blessed Are The Pure In Heart For They Shall See God"



World War Two Burial

Montescourt-Lizerolles Communal Cemetery
1086282 Sergeant John Joseph Courtney, 408 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 15th April 1943, aged 22. Son of John and Alice Courtney, of Liverpool. His brother, William James Courtney, also died on service and he is buried in Montecchio War Cemetery in Italy. His headstone bears the inscription "Treasured Memories Of John, Reunited With Brother Bill, Killed In Italy"
