MONCHY-SUR-EU COMMUNAL CEMETERY

Location Information

Monchy-sur-Eu is a village and commune 17 miles (28 kilometres) east of Dieppe, and 2 miles (3 kilometres) south of Eu on the east side of the Eu-Londinieres road (N.314). The nearest railway station is at Incheville, 3 miles away, on the Eu-Paris line. The communal cemetery is 600 yards north-east of the church and is on the right of a road leading from the church to the Foret D'Eu and Incheville. The graves of 4 British soldiers lie 10 yards east of the entrance to the cemetery.


Burial Details


3600234 Private Alfred Frederick Birbeck, 4th Bn. Border Regiment, died 7th June 1940, aged 20. Son of Thomas and Isabella Birkbeck, of Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland. His headstone bears the inscription "Not Just Today But Always In Silence We Remember"

3601158 Private Thomas Henry Moses, 4th Bn. Border Regiment, died 8th June 1940, aged 21. Son of Abraham and Elizabeth Moses, of Little Broughton, Cumberland. His headstone bears the inscription "No Greater Love Hath Any Man Than This, He Laid Down His Life That We Might Live"

3601163 Private John Alfred McClurg, 4th Bn. Border Regiment, died 6th June 1940, aged 22. Son of Alfred and Mary Bell McClurg, of Dent, Yorkshire. His headstone bears the inscription "A Man Of Peace, Beloved By All"

3599525 Private Matthew Shepherd, 4th Bn. Border Regiment, died 8th June 1940, aged 20.
