BREUVERY-SUR-COOLE CHURCHYARD

Location Information

Breuvery-sur-Coole is a village and commune in the Department of the Marne, 14 kilometres south-south-west of Châlons-en-Champagne. The church is situated in the centre of the village. The two Commonwealth graves are close to the east wall of the churchyard.


Flight Details

R.A.F. Base: Wickenby, Lincolnshire
Unit: 626 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Lancaster Mk I, serial LL753
Target: Mailly-le-Camp, Aube, France
Incident: The aircraft exploded over Breuvery-sur-Coole. Only two of the bodies were found and buried in the village churchyard. The remainder of the crew listed below are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial:

Warrant Officer 2nd Class J. M. B. Liebscher, R.C.A.F.
Pilot Officer H. A. Riddle, R.A.F.
Sgt. J. A. I. Sutton, R.A.F.
Flt. Sgt. R. H. Watts, R.A.A.F.



Burial Details:

171902 Pilot Officer David Stuart Jackson, D. F. C. Pilot in 626 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died 4th May 1944, aged 21. Son of Herbert Guy and Emily Jackson of Wetherby, Yorkshire.

J/86119 Pilot Officer Ross Edward MacFarlane, Air Gunner in 626 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, died 4th May 1944.
