Avereest (Oud Avereest) General Cemetery

​Location Information

Oud Avereest is a village 15 kilometres south-east of Meppel on the Meppel-Ommen road. The cemetery is 1 kilometre north of the village on the road to Meppel. On the north-eastern side of the cemetery are the graves of 3 airmen, one from the United Kingdom and two from Canada.

Pilot in 405 Squadron, 
Royal Canadian Air Force
14th May 1943, aged 21.


Son of Hugh Duncan Beattie and Mar garet Johnstone Beattie, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

His headstone bears the inscription "Whosoever Believeth In Him Should Not Perish But Have Eternal Life"


Hugh was captain of a Halifax aircraft which took off to carry out operations against Bochum, Germany, and failed to return.
